Stop & Shop Healthy Ideas Program
We shop at Stop & Shop Supermarket all of the time so when Mom Central asked me to write about the new Stop & Shop Healthy Ideas program I was all but too glad to get the word out.
Stop & Shop is a large supermarket chain with stores available in CT, RI, MA, NH, NJ, and NY. Stop & Shop not only offers many regular grocery shopping features such as the regular, weekly sales, double coupons, and now online shopping for pickup of catered and floral items; they also offer Peapod (which is grocery delivery at home and a fabulous service), gasoline discounts when you use your Stop & Shop card (we have saved 40¢ a gallon on most fill-ups), and now their new Healthy Ideas program.
Because the first step to making healthier choices begins in the grocery store, Stop & Shop Supermarket launched Healthy Ideas. By using a new on-shelf symbol that helps customers easily identify foods that fit into a healthy lifestyle, Stop & Shop is taking the guesswork out of making healthy food choices. Stop & Shop has placed the Healthy Ideas symbol on more than 3000+ items items and shelf tags throughout its stores. You will find the Healthy Ideas symbol on located throughout the store, including nearly all the fruits and vegetables in the produce department. The symbol highlights foods that have less fat, saturated fat and sodium. It also helps to ensure that the foods we select include a healthful amount of at least one nutrient, such as fiber, whole grains, calcium and minerals.
Healthy Ideas from Stop & Shop was created to make it easy for you to shop for healthy foods without reading all the labels. They took into account the things that matter to all of us – calories, fat, cholesterol, and sodium – and developed a set of criteria that judged foods based on FDA and USDA guidelines. They also made sure that every Healthy Ideas food has at least 10% of the daily recommended amount of one nutrient, such as Calcium or Vitamin C.
Try this Stop & Shop Healthy Recipe: (great for entertaining or a Super Bowl party)
Parmesan Puffs
1/2 cup reduced fat or nonfat mayonnaise- 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- chopped onion
- 7-8 slice of white bread, cut into 1 in. in diameter slices
Instructions:
- Mix mayonnaise and parmesan cheese (should be the consistency of softened butter; adjust accordingly).
- Spread on bread rounds, sprinkle on chopped onion.
- Refrigerate if desired to heat later.
- To serve broil about 5-8 minutes until puffed and brown. Serve immediately.
Makes approximately 60 appetizers.
