Spring Dresses, What a Tease
As winter’s Eskimo looks surrender to the summer’s blissful openness in wardrobe choices, it warms my heart. As a man who loves the way a woman looks in a dress (and dare I say, out of it as well), watching gray skies give way to blue ones and big puffy coats give way to bare shoulders and naturally tanned legs jutting wonderfully from under dresses offer my heart a level of warmth that just about equals anything the Sun can dish out.
This spring really isn’t striking me as anything too special, from the point of view of seeing how women present themselves. The way I see it, women’s fashions are all about just two basic concepts. For one, they want to frame everything so it looks the absolute best it possibly can – which works to varying degrees, as the infamous “muffin top” effect demonstrates. For another, (hetero) women all seem to want to tease us men, showing us just enough to make us hunger to unwrap them like a gift, or a piece of candy. Truth be known, from the “candy” analogy, this season actually makes perfect sense.
See, I noticed during the winter time that VERY bright colors were all the rage. Lime greens, shades of orange typically reserved for road cones… anything seemed to go. By comparison to that, the spring silhouettes are looking downright restrained. What seems to set them into subtlety is that their colors schemes tend to revolve around a central color, with mild shade and hue variations to give almost a mild camouflage look. Indeed, a purple hat with most things would seem to be pimp fodder – but when she’s also wearing a purple dress, it fits right in.
Truth be known, I’d always thought that the idea of wearing hats had pretty much died out in the 60s when JFK forgot to wear his to an important speech. But none the less, it seems that the hat phenomenon is sweeping things – of all the sites I reviewed and show images I saw, hats were a significant part of nearly every line up. It’s one thing during the winter, but it just doesn’t seem like the kind of thing one should expect during the warm months.
Truth be known, while I might have something of a bohemian streak buried underneath my pragmatism, I actually think that there’s some value in having a mismatched palette or texture between a woman’s hat and the rest of her outfit. In some cases, it can give me something to gaze appreciatively at that won’t garner me a dirty look. I find that downright ironic when I think about it, as it seems wrong to dislike that someone finds you attractive.
High Calorie Haute Couture
That installment of Project Runway with all of the designers scrambling to come up with a plan to make clothes out of candies still has everyone buzzing. At first, I thought they were insane. Then, I saw the end results. Some of their creations really did look good enough to eat.
Still, I seriously doubt they would have been as appealing on ordinary bodies as they were on those super-skinny model-quins that strutted down Project Runway’s runway. So, if we are going to start making clothes out of candy, then what’s next? Will we have health food clothing for those of us who take our well being seriously? Why not pasta clothes? Of course, the Italian designers would definitely have an edge in that arena. Or perhaps someone could find a way to make clothes out of beverages? I can just hear someone asking the dressing room attendant “does this come in imported beer?” or “I’ll need a red one to go with the dinner.”
All right. I realize that I am digressing and having way too much fun here. So, before I start again, let me come clean. Even I have got to admit that the yummy creations of the designers for the candies turned to clothing episode turned out looking quite delicious. They were not the sorts of outfits that a gal like me would wear to the office, at least not to MY kind of office. Then again, women who look good wearing candy clothes probably are never required to slave in any office. Those gals just get rich by staying skinny and looking gorgeous. The keeping the weight down, however, might become problematic if one of these gals gets really hungry back stage before the show and starts ripping out her hem for a snack.
While I, personally, have never worn clothes made of candies, I have worn clothes that could be described that way. Once, long before I got too middle-aged and chubby to pull the look off, I had a very chic butterscotch sheath that was just the right length. I loved to wear it paired with dark chocolate low-heeled pumps and, of course, a matching belt. Then I’d brighten the entire ensemble up with a candy-apple red scarf that I would tie around the waist or wrap jauntily around my neck. That, I believe, is the closest I have ever or will ever come to wearing clothes made out of candies. Still, I might need to be wary of stating this too vehemently. After all, I never figured I would be buying toilet tissue made from recycled paper either, but it happened.
Project Runway’s clothes from candies contest turned out to be immensely entertaining for all of us. The task was not just a lot of fun, but also a great challenge for the show’s contestants. When the work was done, their creations were a credit to all of their labors and their ingenuity. Hey! I can’t wait for the designer suites made out of canned goods competition!
